January 2016 Ipsy vs. Boxycharm

     Well hello fellow beauties!  If you are like me then you too have probably had enough of your own chaos this month (what is with January? it's a magnet for chaos).  So lets lighten things up and talk about what we got in this month's Ipsy bags and Boxycharm boxes.

     Again to quickly give the rundown on how these work.  Ipsy is a $10 a month subscription service.  Each month you are sent a small cosmetic bag filled with various beauty products based on a questionnaire you fill out.  Usually products are sample sizes and are from both drugstore and high end brands.

     Boxycharm is a more expensive subscription service at $21 a month.  It almost exclusively contains high end products and the majority of the time they are full sized. I pay for both of these subscriptions myself and the reviews of the products included are my own.  You know the drill.

Ipsy:

January 2016 Ipsy Bag 'All Eyes on You'

     'All Eyes on You' is the theme for this month's Ipsy bag.  It comes in a very brightly colored bag that is kind of Andy Warhol-ish.  The description says "Keep your eyes on the Prize!  From must-have products to prettify your peepers - like the Balm's cult-fave eyeliner - to on-the-go beauty essentials. January is all about a seriously standout look."

     I have tried a few of the Coastal Scents eye shadow palettes, and have mixed feelings regarding them.  So when I saw that I got a brush in this Ipsy bag I was skeptical regarding it's quality.  But I am happy to report that this brush is of a very nice quality.  The ferrule and handle are both very sturdy and tight.  The bristles are very soft and I haven't experienced any shedding.  The shape of this brush is a little awkward as it is very large, best used to apply a shadow across my entire lid which I don't often do.  But that's more just personal preference, not anything particularly bad in how this brush was constructed. 

   Also as a bonus there is a 25% off code that can be used.  I think it's for any purchase at CoastalScents.com the code is Pearl25Off, and of course I like to share those codes with any readers in case they would like to try the products out for themselves.   The code does expire on March 7 of 2016 so it is good for another month or so.

     Admittedly I have abandoned the use of cleansing cloths as they tend to dry my skin out, so these did not appeal to me the way they might to someone else.  I have used these to clean my hands/arms when swatching products. So my impression is based of that type of use. 

    These wipes are different in that there is a lot more product loaded on these cloths than the traditional makeup removing cloths.  Reading the instructions one is supposed to rub two ends together to create a foamy lather, then use the cloth on the skin.  It definitely lathers up and takes off makeup well.  However you are not supposed to rinse the lather off, just leave it on to dry.  I didn't mind doing that with my hands, but I don't think I would like doing that with my face. 

     Also the fragrance with this is very strong.  It's not unappealing. Just very strong.  So while it says it's been formulated for people with sensitive skin, the strong fragrance makes me wonder how it would actually affect my skin.   For now I'm sticking with using them on swatches.

     This is a nice trio of eye shadows from City Color.  The formula was very nice, not quite creamy but smooth with very little powder being kicked up with I dipped my brush into the pan. The colors did apply a little sheer, but they can be built up quite nicely and a base or primer helps tremendously.

     I'm actually quite happy to get this in my Ipsy bag.  It is some shades I would never have picked out for myself.  While it may not be my most favorite shades on myself, I like that receiving this has forced me to try something a little out of my comfort zone.

     Another color that I would probably have not picked out for myself.  This is a deep gold almost bronze eye liner.   The formula of this is fantastic.  It applies easily without tugging, and once it is set it does not budge.  I have yet to try it in my waterline, but I am impressed with what I have seen so far.  I may look into other colors that are more my style.

     I have nothing bad to say about this lip balm.  It made my lips feel soft and hydrated. When first applied it is a bit shiny but nothing too bad.  The hydrating feeling lasts for quite a while, I didn't feel like I needed to constantly re-apply, even through eating and drinking. The flavor is light and fades fairly quickly but is pleasant while it's around. 

   In addition to being a nice balm, it is organic and the proceeds help fund surgeries that fix cleft lips and palates in children around the world.

     January's Boxycharm was also focused on eyes with it's theme being 'Eyes on 2016'.

     The first product is an eye brush set from Royal & Langnickel.  Included in the set is the BX-90 which a pointed crease brush. The BX-80 which is a typical flat shade brush for packing shadow on the lid.  And finally the BX-95 which is a pointed detail brush for smudging and contouring.

    So these are supposed to be revolutionary in their design.  They have a special "textured fiber" bristle (all brushes are of synthetic materials) that is supposed to act more like a natural hair bristle but without the fragility of natural hair.

     As far as performance goes, I don't know if I see a huge difference in how they lay down product. I need to try these out with my ColourPop shadows as usually I prefer to use a synthetic bristle for those to avoid the brush absorbing too much product.  I can say that I am not super fond of the BX-90 the crease brush.  The bristles are long like my other crease brushes, but this brush is very stiff.  It feels like an odd hybrid between a traditional crease brush and a smudging brush.  It's just different, and I'm finding it difficult to get a blown out, well blended crease with this brush.  If you have any suggestions or ideas on how this brush should be used PLEASE tell me so in the comments!  I'd love to know if I am using this wrong.

Blinc Mascara Amplified - Full Size - $26.00

     I wont lie, this product kind of scares me.  It is what they call a 'tubing' mascara, where the product actually forms a tube around the individual lash to provide length and volume.  According to the manufacturer this type of mascara is run proof, smudge proof, wont clump or flake, it is rub proof, waterproof and you can run a marathon in it.  Umm... yeah.  You are also NOT to use makeup remover to remove this mascara.  Simply LOTS of warm water and gentle pressure from your fingers or wash cloth.

      The directions are equally as interesting, you are not to use any moisturizers on your face before using this product as the oils in the moisturizer may interfere with how this product works.  Again it stresses lots of water and pressure should be used to remove the tubes.  You will "feel" the mascara coming lose and there is a note that says you will see the tubes in your sink or hands and they will look like your lashes, but they are just the tubes.

      OK I am intrigued and scared.. but mostly intrigued.. OK maybe mostly scared?  I try to stay far away from any mascara that uses fibers to lengthen.  Mostly because I do have super sensitive eyes and the thought of little fibers accidentally getting into my eyes sounds about as nice as getting a foot rub from a porcupine.   But this doesn't appear to be fibers, they compare it to making a cast around the lash.

     We will see....I'll update you if I do end up trying this out.

Starlooks Pro Luxe Longwear Eyeliner - Full Size - $19.00

     Yay a product that I know how to use!  LOL Really though this is just your typical felt tip eye liner pen.  The black color is very dark and intense.  It does have a bit of a shine to it dried down, so if you like a more matte look for your liner this probably won't be the formula for you.

     Aside from the bit of shine that I am not crazy about. The formula is very nice.  It doesn't settle into my fine lines and it dries down fairly quickly and it stays put. It doesn't appear to be waterproof, but it's not claiming to be either.  It removed very easily with makeup remover.  I was able to create both fine lines and thicker lines with the pen.  It's not anything revolutionary, but it is a good basic liner.

     OK first off I feel the need to mention that while Coastal Scents does list the original price of this palette as $39.95, never have I ever seen it actually sold for that price. The list price on the website says $29.95 and even then I have never seen it sold for more than $19.95.  I don't know where $39.95 is coming from, but that's not the cost of this palette.

     For those unfamiliar with Coastal Scents, it is a discount cosmetic company.  They are well known for having the giant 88 pan palettes that they sell for like $15.00.  The eye shadows in those remind me a lot of the cheap off brand makeup kits that you can buy around the holidays.  You know the ones that have like 80 eye shadows, 15 blushes and 10 lipsticks all in a glitter train case.

     Anyway the most recent products Coastal Scents has put out are their own takes on the Urban Decay Naked palettes.  I have received those in previous Boxycharm boxes and they are.. meh.. they are OK for cheap palettes. Owning the original Naked palettes, there is really no appeal for me in the Coastal Scents versions BUT I will say if money is an issue for you, the Coastal Scents Revealed palettes are a decent enough alternative to Urban Decay.  You can make them work.

     So this Revealed Smoky palette is obviously a play on the Urban Decay Smoky palette. And I will say that of all the Revealed palettes, I like this one the most.  It also has some very close color dupes to the Urban Decay Smoky palette.  Does it behave the same as the Urban Decay? No. They take a little more work to blend out and to build up.  Some of the shadows are a bit chalky.  But again we are talking about a $20 palette compared to a $50 palette.

     The top row of shadows probably has the most misses for me. The first two mattes are pretty chalky and the bright gold color was really sheer.  The bottom row of this palette I was very surprised by.  Many of the colors are very nice, I really like the first 4 shades.  Again they aren't as easy to work with as the Urban Decay.  But for a $20 palette, these really are not that bad.

December Ipsy Vs. Boxycharm

     Hello everybody and welcome to 2016!  To celebrate this new year we are... headed back to last year?  Ok. So, maybe this post is a bit late. The holiday season was very busy for us and I just didn't get around to taking the photos for this until after the new year.

     But it's all good as the extended time has given me some chances to try out more of the products and establish a better review of them!  Also as a quick update from my November Ipsy (can be read here) - I am in LOVE with the Josie Maran 100% Argan Oil Light.  I actually went and bought a full size of it from Sephora.  It has saved my face this winter and has not broken me out at all!

     Anyway you know the routine.  Boxycharm is $21 a month and usually offers 5 full sized for deluxe samples of higher end products. Ipsy is $10 a month and usually offers 5 sample or trial sized products from both drugstore and high end brands.  If you are interested in getting yourself a subscription to any one of these programs you can check out my referral codes on my favorites page (here).  I do not get paid for referrals but I do earn some points which I can then use to redeem additional products.

     I completely lost the card for this month's Ipsy bag. :(  So I don't know what the theme is.  However the products came in this bright red patent vinyl bag.  Not one of my favorites.  It's just kind of boring, and reminds me Halloween boots for some reason.  But in a bad way.... 

Jersey Shore Spa Anti Aging Lip & Hand Polish - Vanilla Bean:

     An all natural sugar scrub for both your hands and lips, this reminded me a lot of some home made recipes.  It smells absolutely divine! Seriously, after use you smell like cookies or some kind of cake batter.  The taste isn't too bad either, so don't worry about using this product on your lips. It's loaded with shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Jojoba Oil and Coconut oil, so it does a fair share of moisturizing in addition to the exfoliation that the sugar provides. 

    Per the directions, I warmed this a little by running under some warm water before using. I think you could probably skip that step if you wanted to, the product would be a bit thicker but nothing unmanageable.  Overall I really like it, so I looked up how much it would cost to buy the product.  $25.00.  Ok, I liked it, but not that much.  Honestly, with all the DIY sugar scrub recipes that one can find online... one can easily make something very similar (if not this exact product) for a fraction of the cost.

     Another conditioning treatment for hair.  I haven't tried this one yet as I am not even close to finished with the other 5 hair treatments that I have received from Ipsy.  It smells nice.  It has a very strong coconut scent which I like, but if you are turned off by coconut you probably won't like it.  Eventually I will get around to using all these treatments and if I find one that just completely blows me away I will make a comment about it similar to what I did above with the Josie Maran Argan Oil.

Pacifica Power of Love Natural Lipstick - Nudie Red:

      I don't know how else to put this.  There was absolutely nothing I liked about this lipstick.  Just nothing.  For starters, the color looks abysmal on me (most warm browns do).  I know its a very popular color trend right now, but it just looks horrible with my skin tone.

     That's not the only reason I disliked this lipstick.  The smell really turned me off.  Being a natural brand, I know Pacifica probably tries to avoid adding fragrance or extra ingredients into their costmetics, but this lipstick smelled horrible.  It just had a very strong plastic cosmetic scent, and I felt like I could almost taste it while I was wearing it.

     Which brings me to the final point. This is also a very uncomfortable lipstick to wear.  It was dry going on, and despite it settling and accentuating every single line and crack on my lips, it never felt like it melded into my lips.  It always just felt like a waxy coating on top.  I eventually just wiped it off through part of my day and put on a lip gloss.

     I have not fully tested this product either. I did swatch it on the back of my had.  Its a thicker primer that has a strong silicone like feel to it.  There is a very light scent but it is not unpleasant.  It dries clear, so there is no color correction properties to it which is something I really like.    There's nothing about it that strikes me as a mind blowing primer, but there's nothing that screams "horrible product" to me either.

     I'll admit it. I am really critical of eye shadow.  I know it, and as such there may be times where I come down kind of hard on some products that other people may like.   But it's for good reason.  I know for a fact there CAN be good quality eye shadows that are available at drugstore pricing.   

     So when I look up this brand and see that they are charging $17.95 for THIS EXACT trio of shadows. I get a little irate.  This product was horrible.  Nevermind getting it to show up on my eyes using a brush or sponge,  I couldn't even get the light color to swatch using my finger!  The other two shades had a terrible color pay off as well.  The best looking one was the shiny bronze color, and even that was pretty sheer, and it didn't build well.

     In short this is a formula I would be angry to deal with even in a cheap product.  To see a trio this small reaching high end pricing and still delivering this kind of crap... it bothers me.  "But Valerie," you may say "This is a 'natural', cruelty-free, cosmetic! Surely it contains better ingredients that make it deserving of a higher price point." 

     Wrong.  The very 1st ingredient in this shadow is talc. Ok now, I'm not going to go on a tirade about talc. It's a very common filler and is present in almost every single eye shadow formula.  However, pricier more designer brands tend to limit the amount of talc used in their formulas.  It's considered a relatively cheap additive and is used heavily by less costly brands.  Again, it's the first ingredient listed, likely the most used.  Draw your own conclusions. 

Boxycharm:

This Month, we celebrate a revolution in style by taking beauty back to a time when Jazz, boas, glitter and pearls hit it big. So raise your champagne glasses, charmers, and get ready for a roaring celebration!"

     $12.00 blotting papers. Wow.  They have gold leaf flecks in them.  I don't know what that is supposed to do, if anything.  I like Boxycharm if only that it lets me get some crazy products that I would never buy myself.  I feel like this is one of them.  Aside from the fact that I rarely need to blot my face, when I do, I don't use expensive paper.

     Well they did say they were taking beauty back to a time of glitter.  This luminizer gel definitely does that!  It's not straight up glitter, but this is very shimmery. It does blend nicely (I just used my finger), but it leaves a fair amount of shimmer all over whatever you are blending with. It also has a very sweet scent that is fairly strong.  It's reminiscent of coconuts, although more the sun tan lotion coconut, not the candy.

    Ultimately I just don't know quite what to do with this.  The wear time doesn't seem all that great, I put some on the back of my hand and the majority of the sparkle wore off within an hour.  That being said the product is so intensely shimmery, one could easily run the risk of looking like a disco ball if they were to re-apply throughout the day.

     I love this product.  I was excited to try it out when I saw that I received it, as I have read some decent reviews. It has helped my cuticles so much during this past few weeks.  I usually am pretty bad about applying cuticle oil throughout the day after I wash my hands.  I only put it on at nighttime and even that has helped a lot. My cuticles have stopped peeling despite we are entering the harshest part of winter. 

 

     The oil does contain a lavender type fragrance.  It can be pretty strong so if you don't like lavender I would probably avoid this cuticle oil.  If that doesn't bother you, I recommend this.  It has a nice glass dropper verses the brush, which is just a personal preference for me.

     Another hair treatment!  Yay!  Ok this one I am curious about as it says it will protect against chlorine damage.  I love to swim and I hate that chlorine in swimming pools absolutely destroys my hair color. This has instructions to apply to wet hair (and leave in) before swimming.  It also has directions to use as a pre-wash treatment and as a mask you set under a dryer after shampooing.  All of these are very different from the traditional leave-in or rinse out treatments I have received, so I will be sure to try this one.

Side note:  it does have an extremely strong coconut scent to it.  When I first opened my box I actually thought maybe the bottle had ruptured the scent was so strong.  Not only is it not ruptured but it has a foil seal on the end.  So yeah, they aren't playing with the scent. 

Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick - Americano - full size - $19.90

     I was SO excited when I saw on the card that this box contained an Ofra liquid lipstick.  If you stalk YouTube like I do, you know there is a lot of buzz regarding this formula.  Imagine my dismay when I dug out this beautiful tube of.. dark orangish redish brown. Sigh. FML.

    Ok I brought myself to do it, I wore it for a bit.  It's still not my color. Not even a little bit.  BUT I do love the formula. So much so that I went and bought myself two better suited shades from the website. The formula is really, mousse-y for lack of a better word.  Most liquid lipsticks are rather thin in consistency.  This is not.  Its thick, but it does go on smoothly and the wear is fairly comfortable for a lipstick that dries down.  

    I am not a fan of the smell, it's a fake sweet scent.  Oddly enough one of my new colors had it and the other one did not.  Americano had it which leads me to believe that most of the shades do have the scent.  It dissipates fairly quickly, so it's not a total deal breaker.

     A lip liner to match the lipstick.  Again its a warm brown, but not quite as orange/red as the lipstick.  I can pull this off if I use it under a different shade of lipstick to create a custom color.

     The formula is really nice, it goes on smoothly, it doesn't pull at my lips while lining them. I don't know about the waterproof claims, I tend to avoid wearing cosmetics to the pool or beach, but the wear time was nice for a typical day.

October Ipsy vs. Boxycharm: Unboxing and 1st Impressions

     Hello everyone, and welcome to November!  To start off this month I want to try something different than I have done before and share what I have received in my Ipsy and Boxycharm subscription boxes.

     If you are unfamiliar with beauty subscriptions, the down and dirty explanation is that you fill out a questionnaire and based on the answers provided you are sent a box of surprise goodies each month. Depending on the service to which you subscribe, the goodies may be sample or full sized and be drugstore or high-end brands.  It's a really fun way to try out new brand and products that you haven't heard of or may be reluctant to buy on your own.

     I subscribe to two of these boxes, Ipsy and Boxycharm.  They are probably two of the more well known beauty subscriptions.  If you are interested in either of these, I have links to each service in my favorites tab here.  I pay for these boxes myself and any referrals I make with those links just awards me points to get additional products.  You can chose to use those links or not, it's up to you.

October Ipsy Glam Bag "Alter Ego" 

   
     The Ipsy subscription is $10 a month.  There is always a little cosmetic bag included and usually contains 4-5 products.  The products are more often than not sample sizes and are a good mix between high end and drug store products.

     This month (October's box) the theme was Alter-Ego.  It came with a duo-sided bag one side a metallic gold and the other a shiny black vinyl.  The products it contained were:

     I was pretty surprised by this month's Ipsy bag.  Usually I get more sample sizes with this subscription and the majority here are full sized products. I am most excited to try out the liquid lipstick and the eyeliner.  The pinky-nude color of the lipstick is one of my favorite day to day colors, and it has a strong minty smell that I also really like.  The eyeliner I am interested in experimenting with as I do not have a lot of liquid type eyeliners.

    The eyeshadow color is nice.  I don't often wear this color of bronze as it pulls really orange on my skin.  I also don't wear cream eyeshadow all that often so we will see how this one goes.  I really like that I got a full size bottle of the leave in treatment for my hair.  Often times sample sizes for hair products do not give me enough uses to determine if I really like it or not.

    The skin boost I could take or leave.  I don't really understand what it's primary goal is other than to "boost skin" whatever that means.  It's an organic product with no preservatives which I know is a bonus for a lot of people.  There is warning on the side of the bottle that states it should be discarded within 6 months of purchase.  That kind of turns me off as I am currently trying out some other skincare items and I don't want this to expire by the time I get around to trying it. 

Boxycharm

     Boxycharm costs $21 a month.  So it is twice the cost of the Ipsy subscription.  However this is almost entirely high-end makeup and a lot of it is full sized.  In fact every thing I got this month is a full sized product.  A nice thing that Boxycharm does, that Ipsy does not do is tell you how much the price of the full sized product is.  So you can keep a running total of how much you have spent vs how much the box is "worth" to you.

     This month's theme was Faces of the Moon and it included the following products:

     So as you can see the value of the products you get far exceed the cost of the subscription box, which is nice if you want to try a number of high end products without fully investing in the cost.  I am probably the most excited for the Palmetto mask.  At $64.00 it is not something I would have ever bought myself, but it actually looks really nice and it smells fresh.  

     The mascara and the blush look interesting. I don't have much experience with the creme blush formula so there may be a bit of experimenting to do.  It may have to wait until spring as the coral color, while pretty, just looks better suited for spring/summer.   I love trying out high end mascaras but very rarely do I purchase them as I find that for my lashes drug store formulas work just as well.

      I am not very interested in this eyeliner.  It's a basic black pencil liner, not particularly dark.  It blends out very easily, which I am sure is due to it also being promoted as a shade, but I know for my eye type it means it will not stay put and most likely run.
